TIME: Stroke,Neurological Conditions and Mobility Challenges

Supporting Recovery

What is TIME: Together in Movement and Exercise?

TIME (Together in Movement and Exercise) is a specialized exercise program was designed by the University of Toronto Rehab Hospital. Its goal is to allow those recovering from stroke to be able to continue make gains in their community.  The program is focused on improving how individuals function during their daily lives and their mobility within the community.  Although originally designed for individuals recovering from strokes, their research found a significant impact on those with other neurologic issues and mobility challenges. The STAR Center is the first facility in the United States that offers this evidenced based program for Stroke and neurologic conditions.

 practice and re-education

If you have had a stroke or other neurologic condition you know that you body doesn’t always respond to what you or your brain are asking. Your brain “shuts off” a part of your body. You must work hard to “re educate” and activate the muscles and joints to move the way you would like. You need to learn new ways of accomplishing tasks and safely move in you environment.  The recovery is long and requires continued practice to not slide backwards.

 standup together

The specific exercises done in small groups.  Working on balance, core strength and movement improves how you function.  Those in the program may use mobility devices and may find walking in the community a challenge. To develop confidence in doing activities in a standing position the program uses exercise bars to feel confident in stand up exercises.  The program focuses on learning to be confident and safely within your home and community as independently as possible. Modification of exercises is available to meet your individuals needs and fitness level. At STAR, you will always find a welcoming supportive community as we move together.
