Can't Stop Me Parkinson's Program- PD Exercise

What is the “Can’t Stop Me” Parkinson’s Program?

“Can’t Stop Me” Parkinson’s Program is a disease specific exercise program focused on impacting participants’ overall function, including posture, gait, balance, strength, flexibility, and cardio vascular endurance. The program consists of three components designed to slow down disease progression and develop new neuro pathways in the brain. The three components include, PD Exercise, Drums Alive- Drummercise, and Rock Steady Boxing.

Who can participate in the PD Exercise program?

All individuals with Parkinson’s Disease are welcome to participate in the PD Exercise program. Modifications will be made for individuals as necessary. Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease looking to improve their tone, rigidity, posture, strength, or overall function.

PD Exercise has two class options: level 1-2 and level 3-4. Interested participants will work with the Program Coordinator to find the best class placement. Level 3-4 will include limited transitions, functional movements, and seated exercises (as needed). Level 1-2 will include faster transitions and advanced movements with less 1:1 support from volunteers and staff members. Modifications and progressions will be available for all classes to fit the needs of each participant.

Come and try PD Exercise. We offer a one day free trial. Care partners are welcome to participate in sessions for no additional cost and all equipment is included. Visit our online calendar for current session information.

Why exercise for Parkinson’s Disease?

Exercise, at a high intensity, has been shown to alleviate rigidity and excessive muscle tone for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease. Individuals with PD should be exercising at a “higher intensity than they believe they can” in order to receive these benefits. Exercise and movement has been shown to slow the progression of Parkinson’s Disease; this is known as neuroprotection. Exercise and movement can create new neuropathways to “bypass” those not functioning well; this is known as neuroplasticity.

What can I expect from PD exercise?

  • PWR!Moves
  • Aerobic exercise
  • Resistance band training
  • Light dumbbell exercises
  • Balance training
  • Flexibility training
  • Cognitive and voice work
  • Fun and games

What are PWR!Moves?

PD Exercise will include PWR!Moves, administered by a Certified PWR!Moves Instructor. These moves are the core of Parkinson’s Disease specific functional exercise and physical therapy programs. There are 4 basic PWR!Moves that are designed to assist individuals with PD as their basic skills deteriorate, leading to a loss of mobility and function. PWR!Moves can be incorporated into exercise classes, therapy sessions, and everyday daily activities and routines.
