Sitting Volleyball

Learn the paralympic sport

What is Sit Volleyball?

Sitting volleyball is a paralympic sport.  It was originally developed for individuals who could not play traditional standup volleyball because of physical disabilities. But sit volleyball can be enjoyed by all.  It is played on a smaller court and uses a shorter net that traditional stand up volleyball.

Sitting does not mean stationary

Don’t be fooled by the name.  There is a lot of movement and fast action in sit volleyball.  Although you won’t see jumping in sit volleyball there is tons of  “scooting’ on the court. Players can use both their arms and legs to move about the court. You will be amazed how fast players can move across the floor. The same skills of bumping, setting, blocking and spiking are all used.  One big difference in sit volleyball that one ‘”check” must be in contact with the floor when playing the ball.

Learn how to play

Most people have never seen sit volleyball, much less played sit volleyball. So don’t shy away from giving it a try. Luckily it won’t take long for you to pick up the basic skills to be able to enjoy the game.  Come join us and join the fun.

Did you know?

Sitting volleyball is a discipline of the sport in which athletes play in a seated position. The sitting game utilizes the same volleyball skills and techniques as the standing game with a few key rule differences. Players use both their arms and legs to move across the court, and it’s a physical, fast-paced game. USA Volleyball is the official National Governing Body for sitting volleyball.

Sitting volleyball has been part of the Paralympic Games since the men’s competition debuted at the Arnhem Games in 1980 (USA Volleyball).
