Functional Strength: moving to improve daily function ages 50 plus

Is life feeling harder as you age?

What is Functional Strength?

Functional strength is all about improving our ability to do everyday life more confidently. This program is focused on maintaining and gaining muscle strength. This is a group exercise class, that can be done seated or standing. Exercises can be modified for your level of ability and fitness. These specific exercises have been found to make the tasks of daily living easier. Research has found that those involved in functional strength programs have maintain their independence longer.

What can Functional Strength do for me?

  • Better balance
  • Improve your ability to arise from chairs
  • Getting in and out of cars will be easier
  • Carrying  groceries or laundry confidently
  • Decrease your risk of falling
  • Walk longer distances
  • Using stairs with confidence
  • Picking up your grandchildren
  • Decreasing joint discomfort
  • Decreasing risk of fracture

Motion aids Quality of Life

Part of the normal aging process is loss of muscle mass. By remaining active with strengthening and endurance activities you minimize that process.  Muscle mass impacts your metabolism and can cause diabetes and other health issues. Our muscles also impact our bone strength.  Those with osteoporosis have been found to increase their bone mass with functional fitness programs. Women are particularly at risk of developing osteoporosis and increase fracture risk after menopause. The longer we sit idle the more muscle we lose.  In each session we work on strength, balance, mobility and our cardiovascular endurance.  So let’s get moving together!  Invest in yourself and your quality of life.
