April is Parkinson's Awareness Month- How STAR Supports and How Can You Join Us?
Parkinson’s disease affects nearly one million people in the United States alone, yet many still don’t fully understand what it is or how deeply it can impact someone’s daily life. At STAR, we’re committed to supporting those living with Parkinson’s—as well as their families—through specialized programs, community connections, and ongoing education.
As April is National Parkinson’s Awareness Month, there’s no better time to show support. Whether you’re looking to learn more, find resources, or get involved, we’re here to walk alongside you every step of the way.
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that primarily affects movement. It occurs when nerve cells in a part of the brain become damaged or die. These cells are responsible for producing dopamine, a chemical that helps control smooth and coordinated muscle movements. As dopamine levels decrease, it becomes harder for the brain to send signals that allow the body to move normally.
Parkinson’s mostly affects people over the age of 60, but it can sometimes start earlier. And while the exact cause of Parkinson’s isn’t fully understood, researchers believe a combination of factors may play a role. There is currently no cure, but with the right support and activities, many people continue to live full, active lives.
At STAR, we offer Rock Steady Boxing, a non-contact, boxing-inspired exercise program designed specifically for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Founded in 2006 by Scott C. Newman after his own diagnosis at age 40, Rock Steady uses the principles of boxing to help improve motor function, reduce the risk of falls, and enhance quality of life. Many participants not only experience physical improvements, but also enjoy the camaraderie and support that comes from being part of a group.
STAR also offers Can’t Stop Me- PD Exercise, an inclusive exercise program designed for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease. This exercise class focuses on big movements, utilizing PWR moves (Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery Moves), and improving overall balance and reducing fall risk. Participants also work on cognitive function with a variety of different activities and speaking in load voices. This exercise class provides a space for individuals to connect, grow, and improve their confidence with moving their body!
In addition, STAR hosts a monthly support group on the first Monday of each month located at Black River Beach Neighborhood Center from 5:00 to 6:30pm. Individuals with Parkinson’s and their care partners are welcome to join us to share experiences, learn from one another, and connect in a welcoming and understanding space.
One great way to show your support, raise awareness, and engage with the Parkinson’s community is by joining the upcoming 3rd Annual Parkinson’s Walk and Awareness Event on Saturday, May 10th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Myrick Park Shelter.
This special event brings together individuals, families, caregivers, and community members—all walking with purpose to support those living with Parkinson’s and to raise funds for valuable resources and research.
Whether it’s through a boxing or exercise class, a support group, or the Parkinson’s Walk on May 10th, there’s a place for everyone at STAR. Let’s start moving together.
