What is Strength in Motion: Gross Motor and Coordination Development?

This program is designed for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are 16+. Participants in this program will work on developing  gross motor and coordination through sport skills, games, and other physical activities. Individuals will learn fundamental sport skills and teamwork skills while enhancing their balance, strength, endurance, locomotor, and coordination.

Who can participate in Strength in Motion: Gross Motor and Coordination Development?

This program is for individuals 16+ and co-ed. Anyone who has an Intellectual or Developmental Disability can attend.

Eligibility and Criteria:

  • 16+, co-ed
  • Designed for individuals with Intellectual or Developmental Disability 
  • Participants must be able to follow directions from the lead facilitator. 
    • If participants need assistance with following directions, a support staff must attend and assist the individual at the program.
  • Participants will be held to the STAR Center Code of Conducts

Individuals with physical disabilities can also participate if desired. Individuals may ambulate independently, or use assistive devices, or wheelchairs.

What to expect at Strength in Motion: Gross Motor and Coordination Development?

Each program session will focus on a specific sport skill or gross motor skill! For example, the skills could be:

  • Catching
  • Throwing
  • Kicking
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Strength
  • Endurance
  • Teamwork
  • Specific sport skills and rules

Strength in Motion: Gross Motor and Coordination Development will begin with a warm up, which will lead into a variety of drills for skill development or games to work on the skill of the day! Program will end with a cool down or fun activity to bring it all together. Individuals will be working with other volunteers and other participants in a variety of games. Listening and following directions will be an important factor of the program to ensure that all participants stay safe and can learn!
