Shooting STARS: Fit Kids

What is Shooting STARS: Fit Kids?

Youth, grades 1-5, will work on developing gross motor skills through sport, games, and other activities. Youth will learn the fundamental skills of sports and learn teamwork skills while enhancing their balance, endurance, locomotor, and coordination.

What makes Shooting STARS different than other programs in the community?

  • An inclusive environment- staff and volunteers adapt to individuals needs to best support their experience
  • Learn new sport skills with repetition and fun games
  • Support from university students and volunteers
  • Transition times and simple instructions to keep youth on task

Who can participate in Shooting STARS: Fit Kids?

Youth, grades 1st through 5th. (may be appropriate for middle schoolers dependent on motor skills) This program is co-ed. Anyone who has a mobility or coordination challenge.

  • Motor Dyspraxia
  • Sensory Integration Issues
  • Balance Issues
  • Motor Programming Challenges
  • Down Syndrome
  • Autism Spectrum
  • Learning Disability
  • Cognitive Impairment
  • Low Muscle Tone
  • Other Congenital Syndromes

Individuals with physical disabilities can also participate if desired. Individuals may ambulate independently, or use assistive devices, or wheelchairs.

Eligibility and Criteria:

  • Youth 1st- 5th grade
  • Co-ed
  • Designed for mobility and coordination conditions
  • Participants must be able to follow directions from the lead facilitator. 
    • If participants need assistance with following directions, a support staff must attend and assist the individual at the program.
    • If you need assistance finding support, please contact STAR. We may have 1:1 mentors available. 
  • Participants will be held to the STAR Center Code of Conduct

STAR Center Program Calendar

What to expect at Fit Kids?

Each day will focus on a specific skill or theme! For example, the skills could be:

  • Catching
  • Throwing
  • Kicking
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Teamwork
  • Specific sport skills and rules

Fit Kids will begin with a warm up, which will lead into a variety of drills for skill development or games to work on the skill of the day! Program will end with a cool down or fun activity to bring it all together. Youth will be working with other volunteers and other youth participants in a variety of games. Listening and following directions will be a main focus of the program to ensure that all youth participants stay safe and can learn!
