OPENING FEBRUARY 2025
NEW STAR CENTER FACILITY
1011 La Crosse Street
Our NEW STAR CENTER facility

Opening in February 2025, we are excited to introduce the first facility in the area that is dedicated to the unique needs of those with physical disabilities and challenges to physical activity. For the first time, everyone will have access to equipment, instructions and resources previously available only in a medical setting.

The STAR Center looks different than other recreational facilities, because the  STAR CENTER IS DIFFERENT. The conditioning and strengthening equipment has been specifically selected to address the needs of those with disabilities.

  • Equipment with high contrast controls and tactile interfaces for those with visual impairment.
  • Knobs that are easily managed by arthritic hands or those with poor grip strength.
  • Exercise equipment that can be adjusted to accommodate leg length inequality, or joints that don’t move equally.
  • Step through design and seats that rotate to ease transitions onto equipment.
  • Ultra slow start up speeds, and low resistance options.
  • Weight machines that are counterbalances so the can be adjusted with one hand and are accessible to those in wheelchairs.
  • Additional assistive devices to aid in leg stability or grasp for those with residuals of trauma or neurologic issues.

Many of the pieces of equipment are usually only available in medical clinic and rehab centers. High cadence passive assistance bikes, balance training and dual activity equipment that have been shown to prevent progression of Parkinson’s and other neurologic conditions. Access to this equipment within the community will allow members to continue to maintain function without the expense of formal physical therapy.  Area physical therapist will be able to expand their recommended exercise programs post discharge because of the availability of this equipment.

Although assistance is available when needed, the equipment is design to be universally accessible, so that members can use the equipment independently. 50% of the equipment can be utilized from a wheelchair and does not require transfers.

The STAR Center facility will also house a variety of traditional aerobic and strength training equipment for those who do not require assistance or accommodation so that caretakers and family can invest in their personal health with activity.

The STAR CENTER is more than Specialized Equipment

The STAR Center is more than adaptive equipment. The STAR Center offers 29 hours of Community Based Specialized Exercise Classes per week. These classes focus on the specific challenges different disease processes present. Many of the exercises are based on the therapeutic exercises often done in physical therapy and shown in medical research to be beneficial in restoring function and reducing pain. STAR Center Classes are a great way to continue your exercise program after discharge from formal physical therapy.  Research has shown that those involved group exercise are more apt to continue with an exercise program. STAR provides a welcoming supportive community as we move together with the goal of optimizing our health.

We have exercise programs for anyone who finds it difficult to exercise at traditional exercise programs . You do not need to utilize a wheelchair or assistive device to find a program that benefits for you. If you have a neurologic condition, balance issues, chronic back pain, shoulder issues, arthritis or simply can not tolerate the pace or transitions of traditional group exercise programs but are not ready for seated exercise, we have a program for YOU.

A model to address Health Equity and Research

In collaboration with the Health Science Inter Professional Research Center the STAR Center will research and report on the impact of health equity on those with disabilities or challenges to physical activity. Knowledge gained through this research will have a national impact on future public health policies, and allow La Crosse to become a leader in this important public health issue. Further, the STAR Center will serve as a blueprint for other communities and health organizations looking to address health equity, improve quality of life and decrease healthcare costs.
