Why is it called the POLARIS AWARD?
Have you ever noticed that our logo does not have a traditional five pointed STAR?
We have a non-traditional 4 pointed star. Because at STAR we don’t do traditional recreation. We provide unique opportunities that adapted to the unique needs of our participants, rather than our participants trying to adapt. The name of the 4 pointed star is called a NORTH STAR. The north star is part of the big dipper and has been used for centuries to guide people.
At the STAR Center our north star guides us to community, inclusion, and a healthier life. Another name for the north star is POLARIS. Hence the name of our award is the POLARIS Award.
